Everyone keys in on the four straight state championships won by the girls of Catalina Foothills but the record is even more impressive than that.

With seven state championships, coach Charlie Kendrick has officially won more titles than any other coach in the history of girls soccer in Arizona and, since Phoenix Xavier lost tonight in the Division I semifinals, the Falcons are one the verge of owning the most championship by a team in Arizona with nine.

Since 2002, the Falcons have owned the finals with the eight titles and one second place finish. That means the school has missed the final day only three times in the past 13 years.

No other coach from Southern Arizona has more than one championship. Flowing Wells was the last team from Southern Arizona to win a title besides Foothills (Sean Ochoa/2009).

The Falcons faced the Sahuaro Cougars for the third time this year and the third meeting was for a trip to the Division II state championship.  Oddly, both teams had to play the semifinal match in Paradise Valley but the result was the same with another victory by the Falcons.

Senior Amber Measley has never played a season without a trip to the finals and she did her part to continue that streak with a long chip-shot in the 43rd to break the 1-1 tie.

Not typically a scorer for the Falcons, Measley put in her fifth goal of the year when the team needed her the most with senior Aminah Settles sidelined with an injury she sustained in the previous round.

Settles leads Foothills with 27 goals.

Likewise, senior Alex Berman scored her second goal of the year in the 48th to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead. It looked like that might be too much for Sahuaro but sophomore Arianna Alvarez cut the lead in half in the 58th.

University of Arizona signee Jasmine Simmons appeared to tie the game up in the 65th on a header but the goal was waived off with an off-sides call.

Simmons leads Sahuaro with 39 goals – also tops in the state.

Simmons hit the top post in the 36th minute and Foothills junior Emily Parker hit the post twice in the match.

No. 2 Buckeye Verrado earned the task of trying to stop Catalina Foothills in the state championship on Saturday. The final will be played at Gilbert Campo Verde High School at 10:30 am and will be carried live on Fox Sports Arizona as part of a double header.

The boys of Tucson High will be playing Glendale Copper Canyon for the D-II championship on the same field at 1 pm.
