After looking at their college-bound roster and being the first to report on the hiring of Hall of Fame coach Rich Alday, it was an easy choice to pencil Ironwood Ridge right back in the state championship game.

At 27-7, this year’s team is poised to finally bring the trophy home after coming up short in 2008, 2011 and 2013. By beating Canyon del Oro in the first double-elimination game, the Nighthawks enjoyed four days of rest before having to face the top-seeded Verrado team.

Winning that game allowed for two more days off and they will now get five days to prepare for their final game at ASU Stadium Monday night after beating Cactus 6-0 Wednesday at Rose Mofford. They just don’t know who they will be preparing for yet.

The loss dropped Cactus to the final game of the Elimination Bracket where they will face Canyon del Oro Friday night for a chance to play in the championship game against Ironwood Ridge.

CDO gave up a 4-0 lead and battled the rest of the way to hold off No. 1 Verrado 8-5. The Dorados will play in their fourth elimination game of the tournament.

The championship game is single elimination.
