Entering last season, Anu Solomon was pegged by Sports Illustrated as the top freshman quarterback who could make an instant impact.

Sports Illustrated got ahead of itself but Solomon proved in the opener against UNLV last week that he can make an impact with Arizona this year as a redshirt freshman.

Solomon’s name is prominent among the nation’s top quarterbacks after the first weekend. Two other redshirt freshmen — Ohio State’s T.J. Barrett and Tulane’s Tanner Lee — are also listed in the passing statistic categories nationally.

Eight freshman quarterbacks attempted at least 10 passes in the first weekend, including Solomon, Barrett and Lee.

The others were Troy redshirt freshman Brandon Silvers, Florida International true freshman Alex McGough, Wake Forest true freshman John Wolford, North Carolina redshirt freshman Mitch Trubisky and Eastern Michigan redshirt freshman Reginald Bell.

Solomon ranked as the top freshman quarterback, and seventh overall, nationally with his 425 yards passing in the 58-13 win over UNLV.

He also leads freshman quarterbacks with his four touchdown passes, which ranks third nationally.

Barrett, rushed into duty after the season-ending shoulder injury suffered by senior Braxton Miller, tops all freshman in passing yards per completion (18.8 yards) and pass efficiency (237.2). Passing efficiency is calculated using a player’s passing attempts, completions, yards, touchdowns and interceptions.

Solomon’s passing yards per completion is 17, which trails Barrett among freshmen and is 13th nationally. His passing efficiency of 168.0 trails Barrett (ranked third nationally) and is 24th in the country.
