Former Arizona Wildcats place-kicker Nick Folk has more to do with the new NFL extra-point rule as any other kicker in the history of football.

Folk, an eight-year NFL player since his Arizona Wildcats career ended in 2006, holds the NFL record for extra-point attempts made without missing once (292 of 292). The next highest is Ryan Succop with a career mark of 187 of 187.

The NFL owners on Tuesday approved the competition committee’s proposal to snap the ball from the 15-yard line on extra-point attempts to make them more challenging. Kickers made more than 99 percent of the kicks with the ball snapped from the 2 in recent years.

The Arizona Wildcats’ program can take pride in the achievement of Folk, whose value with the New York Jets was indicated by them placing the franchise tag on him.

During his Arizona Wildcats’ career from 2003-06, Folk missed two extra-points (both in his junior season) and finished 79 of 81 in his collegiate career.

The rule changed to try extra-point attempts from the 15-yard line is a minor triumph for Folk, at least, because NFL commissioner Roger Goodell contemplated eliminating the play last year.

“I know it’s a successful thing, but so is throwing for 5,000 yards now,” Folk told NFL.com last year. “Nobody could do it a long time ago, and now, shoot, there’s five or six guys doing it a year. Are they going eliminate the forward pass again?”
