Junior League Softball World Series
August 2-8: Kirkland, Washington
Sunnyside defeated Kentucky 14-4 in the first round of the Junior League World Series Thursday afternoon in Kirkland, Washington. (NOTE: Although there is a reported score of 16-4, runs beyond the 10-run rule do not count unless they are a result of a homerun. If the winning run is on third and a player hits one to the gap then the batter is only credited with a single and one RBI, even if the bases are loaded.)
Kentucky is the Central representative and they took a 3-0 lead on Sunnyside heading into the bottom of the second but that was as close as Kentucky (1-4) was going to get against the West team.
What followed was a 14-hit explosion the rest of the way and with Sunnyside scoring four in the bottom of the second, six in the third and four more in the fifth while Kentucky added one in the top of the fourth.
Angel Sallas went 3-for-3 with five RBIs including a double and a homerun to lead Sunnyside and Arlett Arreola went 3-3 with a double and five RBIs. Andrea Escarcega went 2-3 with a double and an RBI, Alexandria Tapia went 2-3 and Jazmine Ayala had a triple and an RBI.
Viviana Orantez, Anacely Gutierrez and Alexis Anderson all added hits. Anderson drove in the winning run in the bottom of the fifth.
Sallas picked up the win for Sunnyside while Brianda Owens had the loss for Kentucky. Owens went 3-3 with a double and two RBIs to lead her team.
Sunnyside moves to the semifinal round where they will play Asia-Pacific. (Norzagaray, Bulacan, Philippines) on Friday.
