Junior League Softball World Series

August 2-8: Kirkland, Washington

The Asia-Pacific representative built a 6-1 lead on Sunnyside only to see the West make a valiant effort in the bottom of the seventh. Sunnyside eventually had the tying run at the plate with two outs but the magic ran out.

Arlett Arreola homered to lead Sunnyside off but that was followed with a line drive for the first out. Destyni Payan came up and delivered on a double to keep all hopes alive. Down 6-2, Viviana Orantez brought in Payan to cut the lead down to 6-3.

Alma Tauli was in the circle for the Philippines and, even though she was getting hit hard, she induced a pop fly for Sunnyside’s second out but then Anacely Gutierrez came up and tripled to score Orantez. 6-4.

Tauli shut the door on Sunnyside after another infield fly ended all hopes.

The loss dropped Sunnyside out of the championship game on Saturday where they would have faced Tampa Bay, Florida (6-0) on national TV. Instead, Sunnyside (5-1) will face Robinson, Texas (4-2) in the third place game earlier in the day.

The loss to the Philippines (4-2) was the first postseason setback for Sunnyside. With an 11-1 record, Sunnyside has outscored their opponents 132-34.

Asia-Pacific was hammered 18-3 by Florida last Sunday and that was followed by a disappointing 12-6 loss to the host team, Bellevue, Washington. Since then, Asia-Pacific has reeled off four wins in a row to make the championship game.

Florida beat Texas 12-5 in the other semifinal game and Sunnyside defeated Texas 3-0 on Tuesday during Pool Play.

Asia-Pacific scored four runs in the top of the first and Sunnyside had a difficult time against Tauli until the bottom of the seventh.

Marina Gomez, Angel Sallas and Jazmine Ayala all saw pitching action with Ayala throwing the last three innings.

Gutierrez went 3-4 with an RBI triple, Orantez went 2-4 with an RBI and Andrea Escarcega added another hit for Sunnyside. Ayala had an RBI triple to go along with Payan’s double and Arreola’s homerun.

Jovelyn Policarpio led the Philippines with two doubles and two RBIs.
