The Canyon del Oro Dorados hosted their annual district swim meet Thursday featuring the other two high schools of the Amphitheater School District, Ironwood Ridge and Amphitheater.

Ironwood Ridge senior standout Cisco Vazquez helped pace the Nighthawks to victory thanks to top finishes in the 200 medley relay, 200 IM, 200 relay and 100 back.

Vazquez competed for Sonora this past summer at the Olimpiada Nacional (Mexico National Olympiad) in Monterrey, Mexico. According to Vazquez, the Sonoran team discovered he had dual citizenship and visited him at one of his Ford Aquatics meets.

“They came and saw me at a meet at Arizona and I went and really enjoyed it,” Vazquez explained. “They took the top 12 and I swam the 200 back.”

Vazquez is currently “stacked up” with advance placement classes in hopes of earning a shot at a college scholarship to swim at the next level but he would like to compete at state first in the 100 back and the 200 free.

The meet also featured Canyon del Oro senior Mackenzie Orlosky. Orlosky has the unique distinction of coming full circle with her swim coach Jen Inboden. Inboden has known Orlosky since her preschool days.

“It’s awesome,” Orlosky said. “She taught me how to swim and now you can say she is sending me out in a way. I feel I have a real connection with her.”

Orlosky learned how to swim at the old Oracle Heights pool in Casa Adobes. This was the same pool where University of Arizona and Olympic swimmer Lacey Nymeyer got her start.

Orlosky is happy to be the leader of the Dorados.

“It’s a fun but bitter-sweet feeling knowing I am the leader now,” Orlosky added. “I get to pass on all the traditions but it also means it is the end for me.”

Amphitheater was led by Tristan Cunningham. Cunningham helped the Panthers score in the 200 IM and 100 free.

Ironwood Ridge coach Anne Fitzsimmons and her assistant, former Nighthawk swimmer Heather Crocchi, swim on the same masters team with Inboden (FAST). Inboden competed in the 84th La Jolla Rough Water Swim this past weekend where she medaled for her age division.

NOTE: After a year’s absence, the High School Classic is back at the Hillenbrand Pool on the University of Arizona campus. The meet will be held Saturday, Oct. 3.
