Rancho Cucamonga swept the San Jose Giants (3-0) to capture the California League Championship Series. The Quakes won 12-3 on Thursday night in the series opener and then 4-3 on Friday night. The clincher came Saturday with former Sahuaro standout Alex Verdugo leading the way to a 5-0 win.
Verdugo went 3-4 with a double and two RBIs on Saturday to help guide the Quakes to their second title in four tries. The first championship came in 1994.
Verdugo was drafted by the Dodgers in the second round (No. 62). He was promoted from Great Lakes to Rancho Cucamonga (Class A Advanced) last month.
In the final game, Verdugo doubled in the top of the fifth to bring in the first run of the game and followed that up with an RBI in the sixth to extend the lead to 2-0. Verdugo also singled in the eighth.
