District 5 Little League
Wednesday, June 22: Mehl Park
Thornydale defeated Marana 11-1 Wednesday night in 9-10 District 5 Softball action. The win moved Thornydale (2-0) to the championship game scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m. at Mehl Park. Marana (1-1) dropped down to the Elimination Bracket where they will play Tucson Mountain (1-1) on Thursday night. The winner of that game will face Thornydale on Friday.
Marana loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first but Mia Gutierrez picked up two strikeouts to get out of the jam. Thornydale scored a run in the bottom of the inning after Sami Sotelo singled and then scored on an error later in the inning.
Marana tied the game up in the top of the second on a bases-loaded walk issued to Logan Linn. Linn’s RBI evened things out but Thornydale came right in their half of the inning. Clarissa Figueroa, Aaliyah Pereda, and Destanee Nez had RBIs in the inning and Sotelo knocked in two more to give Thornydale a 6-1 lead.
Gutierrez finished with five strikeouts and Sotelo replaced her in the circle to start off the third inning. Sotelo struck out six of the seven batters she faced, giving up a hit-by-pitch to Domonique Hale in the fourth.
Thornydale scored five more in the bottom of the fourth, paced by a two-RBI double from Kalista Axtell. Marana collected eight walks in the game with McKenna Giles and Linn picking up two each. Kyla Long scored the lone run and both Giles and Long saw pitching action for Marana.
Sotelo and Axtell both went 3-for-3 to lead Thornydale.
